Mini sessions are one of my favourite ways to photograph people.
They’re quick, relaxed, and perfect for anyone who wants beautiful photos without committing to a full session. Whether you’re updating your headshot, grabbing a few portraits with your partner, wrangling the kids for a family photo, or bringing along your dog, a little preparation goes a long way.
This guide will help you get the most out of your session so you walk away with natural, confident images you’ll love.
Choose Outfits That Feel Comfortable and True to You.
You don’t need to overthink wardrobe for a mini session, in fact, simple is best.
Neutral tones, soft colours, and clean lines always photograph beautifully. The goal isn’t to match perfectly; it’s to look coordinated without feeling forced.
If you’re coming for a headshot, think about what represents your work or personality. Solid colours work well, and layers can add depth without distracting from your face.
Most importantly, wear something you feel good in. Confidence always shows.
Arrive a Little Early to Settle In.
Mini sessions move quickly, so arriving 5–10 minutes early gives you time to breathe, fix hair or clothing, and get comfortable before we start. Kids warm up faster, pets calm down, and you get a moment to relax before the camera comes out.
Those few minutes make a noticeable difference in how natural the photos feel.
Keep Things Simple and Enjoy the Moment.
Because the session is short, there’s no need to plan a long list of poses or ideas. I’ll guide you through everything, where to stand, how to angle your body, what to do with your hands. You don’t need to perform or be “good at photos.” Just show up as you are.
Mini sessions are all about capturing genuine expressions: a quick laugh, a cuddle, a natural smile. The more relaxed you are, the better the images will be.
Bring a Few Essentials (Especially for Kids and Pets).
A couple of small items can make the session run smoothly:
- A brush or hair tie
- Tissues or wipes for little faces
- Treats for pets
- A warm layer for winter sessions
Nothing fancy — just the basics that help you feel prepared.
